Spilled Wine^® Weigela florida

I have 10 spilled wine weigela. I intially purchased 6 from a local retailer. I put 3 in the front yard and 3 in the back. The 3 in the front didn't look like they were going to make it after spending spring and sumer in the north side of the house. I dug them up and placed them on the sw side of the backyard with the other 3 I purchased. The 3 that were in the backyard were doing better but didn't bloom because they were purchased after bloom time. Within the 3 years I had little to no blooms on all 6. This is the first spring all shrubs leafed out and I had blooms on 5 of the 6. Since I had success I purchased 4 more. In my clay soil they needed 3 years to become established. I would recommend this shrub for foliage color and blooms.

Bought and planted 7 from a nursery last fall (2021) and they looked great. Over winter they looked awful, but over spring they leafed out with their dark wine colored leaves. It is June 2022 and no flowers yet. I hope that they flower soon. We live in zone 7 in North Georgia. Hope they perform with beautiful blooms soon. I'm disappointed that we did not get a spring bloom as it says they do.

I planted a Spilled Wine about 4 years ago and I am very pleased with it. The dark leaves are a nice contrast to surroundings. The shape and size require little if any pruning. In spite of deer and rabbit issues with other plantings in our yard, they have not bothered the Spilled Wine. It is on the west side of the house where it seems fine with the hot afternoon summer sun. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the spring flowering is minimal. Early spring of this year I gave it some rose fertilizer and it does seem to have a bit more bloom this year, so that may or may not be the trick for a few more blooms??? But other than the underwhelming spring bloom, it's a pretty, well shaped shrub all year.

I have a number of Proven Winners shrubs in my yard. And I have had varying success, partly because the garden on one side of my front yard gets and inordinate amount of sun and in the middle of the summer that can be a bit much for even the drought-resistant shrubs. This little beauty arrived with a few flowers on it and proceeded to give us a full tease of what it had in store for us. Three years in it has been a strong performer, the deep purplish foliage and bright pink blooms are gorgeous. It has a tendency to send out sucker brush branches, but as long as you nip those back every year it keeps it's thick beautiful look. I highly recommend this shrub.

Planted a Wine and Roses with huge success. Planted about 6 more with various success 2 years later. Suspect soil responsible for variation in plant growth but all producing well. Tried 3 off these for in front of the front porch. Had to mail order as couldn't locate them locally any morr. Came with no dirt, common shipping method. All looked to die off over winter. One did. The other two took months to come back. Looks good now. Will have to see what happens spring next year before I replace the dead one.
