I first saw this plant 3 years ago in a test garden of rows of varying salvias but the row of RDS was where all the hummingbird activity was. I brought neighbors a week later and they saw the same thing. Every year since then my neighbors and I have planted 3 each of these in containers to draw in the hummingbirds. We are fully satisfied watching all the activity. It is my favorite plant for the hummingbirds and I will never be without it.

Maintenance Notes:This is a wonderful annual Salvia (except in frost free zones) compact and richly colored it is easy and trouble free. It will just bloom, and bloom and bloom all season without stopping.
You can easily trim to keep the shape or size where you want it, and it will branch out and become even thicker and more full of flowers.
Regular watering and fertilizing will keep the plant at maximum color and growth but it is amazingly tough and once established in a pot of the garden will tolerate lower levels of food and water. However, severe drought will cause lower leaves to drop and if this happens give it a quick haircut removing the upper 1/3 of growth and once it back to normal watering it will fill back in.

First of all - this plant gets HUGE! I'd say closer to 50-60 tall... It grew past our Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas in our garden and was covered in countless blooms. Hummingbirds were all over it all the time... Super low maintenance - we planted it and left it alone! It performed much better for us in the landscape than in a container... It was lovely in the container, but in the landscape it really thrived!

Rockin Deep Purple (RDP) is not sterile. It will set seeds. I didn't try to set seeds on RDP. I found 4 seedlings from RDP that I feel were from seeds that must have fallen from the flowers of RDP to the soil in my 2018 garden and started to grow in spring of 2019. I dug out the RDP seedlings and grew them in my 2019 garden. It's a wonderful salvia plant and one of my favorites. A great pollinator plant loved by bees, other insects, hummingbirds, and the occasional butterfly.

I planted this to attract butterflies and to fill in a spot in my front garden. The butterflies, hummingbird and bees absolutely love it. The color is beautiful deep purple and blooms all season long with tons of blooms.

This plant is stunningly beautiful and amazingly vigorous. It attracts hummingbirds like a magnet and is constantly covered with bumblebees and honeybees. It looks exactly like Salvia ‘Amistad’ but with a growth habit that is very dense in comparison, with heavy self-branching. It is less brittle than ‘Amistad’ too, but could still benefit from staking if growing in exposed, windy conditions. Love this plant!

Planted this in 2 containers. The highlight of my rear garden. It gets partial sun. It is spectacular; the thriller in my containers. Hummingbirds visit throughout the day. Next season, I will be planting this throughout my rear gardens. LOVE!

Love all these new color annual TALL salvia. I've already seen a hummingbird at mine this Spring. I like the classic Black and Blue but these hybrid colors are even better!
