My Happy Jack clematis is two years old and absolutely gorgeous. As beautiful as it is I don’t find it has a particularly lengthy bloom time, as the description suggests. I have another clematis that blooms throughout the summer but this one seems to have a similar bloom period to other spring flowering clematis in my area. I’m docking it one star just for this reason. Otherwise it’s a really lovely plant and I’ve greatly enjoyed having it.

It's a super easy-to-grow clematis with great color and large flowers!
Velvety plum-purple flowers with intriguing center highlights and bright yellow stamens characterize this version of the ever-popular 'Jackmanii' clematis. This early and long-flowering beauty blooms from mid-summer into fall, and is noted for its intense purple flower color and large (3-5" blooms). It flowers on new wood and old wood so you simply prune it back to 2 feet each spring. Winner of a Green Thumb award from the Direct Gardening Association.

I've had Happy Jack growing up a trellis for around 10 years now. I cut it back to around two feet in early spring, and feed it. It grows very quickly every year and blooms reliably. However, I don't find it blooms over a long period--more like two to three weeks, definitely not mid-summer into fall as in the description on this website. One year I experimented with cutting it back by half after it bloomed, but this did not produce new flowers as I'd hoped. It's growing well in a spot that receives sun in the morning and mid to late afternoon, shade during the middle of the day.

The blooms on this plant are absolutely gorgeous; very large (about 4"), bright deep violet with yellow centers! The blooms also last for several weeks. I love this plant.
